Seaweek Timaru Success on it’s Return

Seaweek Timaru 2026: Success at Connecting with our Moana

Seaweek Timaru made a fantastic return this year, bringing our community together to celebrate, explore, and learn more about our moana.

Coordinated by the team here at the South Canterbury Eco Centre, the week featured a wonderful variety of events hosted by local organisations and businesses. From a waka ama experience to beach walk, citizen science, and beach clean up, the programme offered something for everyone. It was incredibly rewarding to see such a diverse range of opportunities that brought the Timaru community together.

In a town the size of Timaru, collaboration is incredibly valuable. Seaweek created opportunities for local businesses, organisations, and community groups to work together while sharing a common goal — connecting people with our moana.

One of the highlights for us was receiving entries for the Snap & Win competition and seeing how people chose to connect with the ocean. Community members shared photos of their favourite ways to enjoy the moana — whether that was walking along the beach, spotting marine biodiversity, or simply taking a quiet moment by the sea.

Encouraging our community to explore, learn about, and protect the marine environment is at the heart of Seaweek. When people feel a connection to the moana, they are more likely to care for it — and events like these help strengthen that connection.

Seaweek Timaru would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and generosity of the event hosts who shared their time, knowledge, and passion with the community. Their creativity and commitment made the programme both engaging and inspiring.

We would also like to extend a huge thank you to PrimePort Timaru for sponsoring the marketing of Seaweek Timaru. Their support was a real game changer in helping spread the word across the community and ensuring people knew what events were happening throughout the week.

Thank you also to Seaweek at a national level, who are the powerhouse behind this nationwide celebration of our oceans.

Finally, thank you to everyone who hosted an event, attended an activity, shared a photo, or simply took a moment during the week to connect with the moana. Together, we helped make Seaweek Timaru a meaningful celebration of our ocean and our community.

We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year.
