Our Student Environmental Leadership Day is returning after its success in 2025!
Calling Year 5 – 7 student leaders! Join us for a dynamic, hands-on day designed to inspire and empower young changemakers from your Enviro, Green, WAVE, or Student Council teams across South Canterbury.

Building on last year’s booked-out event, we aim to empower students with the message that “We Can Make a Difference.” The day encourages students to explore how small, meaningful actions can create big environmental change. Grounded in the Sustainable Development Goals, the programme links literacy, wellbeing, and sustainability through interactive learning, collaboration, and connection.

Activities include:

🪱 Worm Farming – learn how to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich compost, with practical tips you can take back to your school.

🌱 Native Planting – help feed local biodiversity while beautifying your school or community green space.

🧺 Harakeke Weed Mats – create a natural, biodegradable weed mat using harakeke – a practical tool inspired by nature.

The day will also include fun icebreakers, collaborative learning, a student-led lunch, and a group hui to reflect on what each school will take back to help drive change in their communities.

At the start of the day, we’ll invite each school to share a 1-minute update about what they have been doing (or hoping to do) for the environment at their school. There’s no expectation to prepare anything — a student simply sharing a quick update is absolutely fine. If you would like to create a PowerPoint or similar, we can happily accommodate this.

Doors open at 9.40am. Please bring your own morning tea to have before we start – coffee and tea is available for adults and we are providing lunch for everyone.
This free event is presented in partnership by Environment Canterbury, South Canterbury Eco Centre and Enviro NZ.
Spaces are limited to 10 schools – 4 student leaders (Year 5 – 7) + 1 teacher from your school.
Register now by filling out this Google Form . Registrations close Thursday 2 April, or earlier if spaces fill.
