Caretakers Waste Workshop is back for 2026!
We invite all school caretakers and property managers from across South Canterbury to join us for a morning of sharing, learning and networking.
What’s on the agenda?
♻️ School waste & recycling Q&A
Corrie and Briony from Enviro NZ will discuss different waste and recycling streams to help your school reduce waste and save money. To make the most of the session, please email through any big questions you’d like answered beforehand.
🌿 Planting tour
Join Ron Lindsay (Sustainable South Canterbury Trustee) for a walk around the Eco Centre and Raptor Trust grounds as he shares practical lessons from years of planting. Ron will discuss things like choosing the right plants for the right place, avoiding common mistakes like planting trees too close to buildings or walkways, and selecting low-maintenance species that provide colour, habitat, or hedging without taking over.
💡 Ideas and networking
A collaborative brainstorming session where we’ll share what’s working well at our schools, discuss common challenges, and identify where more support is needed.
Of course, no workshop would be complete without morning tea and the chance to connect with other caretakers. A big thank you to Enviro NZ for generously sponsoring the refreshments.
We encourage schools to bring up to two people to get the most out of the workshop. If you’re a sole caretaker, consider bringing another staff member or board representative. High schools are also welcome to bring a student representative.
RSVP
When you RSVP, please let us know:
- What school waste topics you’d like to learn more about (e.g. batteries, e-waste, recycling, composting, soft plastics, etc.).
Please RSVP by Thursday 6 August to Alice at admin@scecocentre.org.nz.
Please bring appropriate footwear for the plant tour and help us spread the word to other schools. We look forward to seeing you there!
