Diverting tonnes of waste from landfill
The Crows Nest has been extremely successful in reducing Timaru landfill waste and cycling funds back through the Charitable Trust towards other sustainable projects like our Eco Centre.
Each year thousands of kilograms of waste are being successfully diverted from the landfill, for the year ending 30 June 2024 the team collected:
20,310 kgs from Kerbside and
287,550 kgs of inwards goods from all Timaru District Council transfer stations, plus
60,580kgs of E-Scrap (electronic waste) and
26,317kgs of metal, all for recycling was collected.
2,424kgs of batteries in our first year of operation.
This is a massive achievement and it continues to grow.
Collection points for donated goods
Public and businesses donate items via drop-offs at Shaw Street Timaru and at the smaller towns Geraldine, Pleasant Point or Temuka. Transfer stations are free of charge for good quality reusable items or The Crows Nest provides a kerbside collection within Timaru for heavier items like beds, lounge suites, cabinets , or TVs that are unable to fit in your cars
Electronic Waste Goods
The Crows Nest specialises locally in sorting, cleaning, and attractively presenting goods for resale, you can rest assured that electrical items are also tested and tagged for safety. These goods are soon in the hands of new users at affordable prices. The income supports the cost of staffing The Crows Nest shop and, in high turn-over months, also the wider work of the Trust including education activity at the Eco Centre.
